Social Benefits of Homeownership

A recent report by the National Association of Realtors identifies homeownership's numerous social benefits. The report, "Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing," cites extensive research showing that homeownership increases civic participation, lowers crime rates and boosts children's educational performance.

Homeowners have a far lower move rate compared with renters. Nearly 30% of renters changed residential locations in 2008 to 2009, while only 5.2% of owner-occupied residents moved. Because homeowners remain in their homes longer, they add stability to their neighborhoods.

Homeowners have an incentive to improve the overall quality of their surrounding community. This incentive is evident in greater community involvement and awareness. Homeowners are twice as likely than renters to know the name of their local school board representative. One study found that 77% of homeowners voted in local elections compared with 52% of renters. Homeowners also had a higher incidence of membership in voluntary organizations.

Homeowners are more likely than renters to form voluntary crime prevention programs, making it easier to identify a perpetrator of crime. Crime, drug use and juvenile delinquency rates all decrease in stable neighborhoods with extensive social ties. Consequently, homeowners are far less likely to become crime victims.

Homeownership makes a significant positive impact on educational achievement. According to the "Journal of Urban Economics," teenage students of homeowners have a greater likelihood of graduating and young children of homeowners tend to have higher levels of achievement in math and reading. The positive effects on education may arise not from homeownership alone but from the combined social benefits of homeownership, namely a lower move rate, greater neighborhood stability, enhanced social ties and increased civic participation.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is throwing a lifeline to potentially hundreds of Idaho homeowners who are delinquent on their mortgage payments.

The Idaho Housing and Finance Association is getting $13 million to provide zero-interest bridge loans of up to $50,000 to Idahoans in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure.

To be eligible for the Emergency Homeowner Loan Program, owners must be behind in their mortgage payments because of job loss, underemployment or a medical condition, said HUD spokesman Lee Jones.

Legislative waste 101

In Idaho this year it is a picture that is quite embarrassing. Our legislative body gave a seminar on how to waste time while influencing people. Armed with what the republicans think was a mandate from their constituents, was actually a figment of personal and party line topics designed to provide the democrats with the gotcha factor.

Watching the childish behaviors of the elected officials this year on both side’s democrat and republican were lessons that you would want your small children to ignore. Sleeping and reading the news paper while our business was being conducted was embarrassing while news media covered the big events.

The constituents were not listened to this year. Most were against some form of the bills, but, they were rammed though into law. Just go home give us a break from wasting our money and maybe you will get some wisdom and probably realize how idiotic you behaved.

Yahoo! The unemployment numbers are out!

These are the same numbers that come out once a month and supposedly tell how the economy is doing. The new numbers show that we had a modest gain evidently almost a percentage point.

Well if you are into percentage points and gambling then I guess it would give you some fodder for the morning water cooler if you have a job and a water cooler. What still always amazes me is the way that the jobs are counted and more than that, the jobs that aren’t counted.

We are now a country of bits and pieces; it’s like getting a tweet of information to hope for the serge of warm and fuzzies. If you just read the headlines then we are doing much better, but, if you get into the meat of the way that it is measured then we are probably doing maybe just a little better. Those that have given up trying to find a job for just one month are no longer counted and thus are taking away from unemployment. These types of paper maneuvers make up the changes in statistics.

It is a very good thing that the small businesses are beginning to hire; they are the lifeline of your local economy. Now we need the big business and corporations to do the same.
